Spade Sage: a story about humbleness
In the Jataka Tales Series the traditional tales of the Buddha’s past lives are presented for the enjoyment of Western children. In “The Spade Sage”, the Buddha tells how he was once a simple farmer, his only possession a spade which tied him to his worldly life. He is finally able to free himself for a life of contemplation by hurling his spade into the river. The moral may seem obscure to a young mind attached to the latest computer game gadgetry. But this series offers seeds to be planted, lessons of value which transcend their cultural heritage.
